Scream for me Melbourne!
Would you expect to see me at an Iron Maiden concert? I wouldn’t! And yet there I was at the Rod Laver arena on February 6 watching this die-hard heavy metal band.
The crowd was enraptured. Picture a sea of black t-shirts (and one red one - that was me), hands pumping and the majority of the audience joining in with the words. There were young teenagers to baby boomers in the crowd.
I’ve got to say, contrary to my prior reservations about deciding to go to the concert with Andrew, his Dad, brother and good friend, it was an amazing show. They had fountains of fireworks go off across the stage, huge backdrops with their signature art-work, a three-person tall robot and best of all they gave a really passionate, energetic performance. The lead singer, Bruce Dickinson sang powerfully while diving and jumping around the stage for the entire show. He, the three guitarists and the drummer definitely have a charisma. The music vibrated through us.
There was no trouble from the crowd that I could see apart from a few people trying to body-surf right at the front and being hauled down by the security immediately.
They played their older music (it is 20 years since they have been to Melbourne) which the fans loved. A lot of the songs I knew as Andrew plays them in the car or at home sometimes.
It’s something I never would have done before I met Andrew but I’m really glad I got to experience it.

Your education is complete now, Ruth.
Good on Andrew for introducing you to the heavy metal fraternity!!
It was a rip roaring night.
Soon you will be wearing a pentogram and growing a mullet
Hee hee - the lead singer said at the concert that he had read a review of one of their other gigs that said there wasn’t a mullet in sight but the lead singer seemed to think there would have been a good few there and I think he was right! Although there were a good few non mullet type people too.
All the guys in Year 10 at Port Kembla High, went through a real heavy metal stage - ACCA DACCA (AC/DC), Iron Maiden, Poison(eek!), Bon Jovi, Cinderella. They grew long hair and wore black mega death t-shirts and grew their nails long. It was like a cult!
Maybe you can go along to the next concert and hurl yurselves into the mosh pit!!!
Hey - the book A Widow for One Year is tops. Did you see the movie - The Door in the Floor??
I’m really enjoying the book - I’m only part of the way through and already a lot has happened so I’m wondering what can happen next or what is going to be told in the rest of the story. He builds up the characters well I think. Is the movie worth seeing?
I’m staying clear of mosh pits!
The movie is worth it but only tells half of the story or maybe even just a quarter and stops.
I thought Kim Basinger played the grieving mother very well.
Ruth won’t be wearing pentagrams I don’t think (I don’t think I’ll be taking her to any of the more extreme bands that I like
). I was well surprised that Ruth got into the gig! She had a really good time as I don’t think she knew what to expect
I might pick up A Widow for One Year after I finish reading Look to Windward by Ian M Banks (Thanks Rose!!).
