Mozzee Moving to Melbourne
The biggest recent news for me is my imminent departure from Sydneyland to Melbourne town. I have been looking for jobs over the past few months with the aim of joining Andrew by the end of this year and in the last fortnight, it all came to fruition. I landed a great 6 month contract with the Victorian government developing content for a website used by community agencies.
It’s exciting thinking about where to live and planning the move although there is heaps to do and it is very hectic. Due to the urgency of the project, I had to give short notice to my work in Sydney and come down to Melbourne for a couple of days this week to get up to speed on what needs to be done before moving down permanently next week. The removalists are coming to pick up my stuff next week too.
It’s a bizarre feeling moving away from Sydney where I’ve been for the past 16 years. It will be sad to leave behind friends and my life there but the good thing is it’s easy to visit regularly. I’m all disorientated at the moment too with all the flying around. Sometimes I have to stop and think for a few seconds to remember which city I am in and where I am going.
It’s amazing that it has all come together. I wasn’t sure when the right opportunity would come up but it is fabulous that it has so quickly and it will be so much fun exploring the new city with Andrew and getting to know the different interesting places here.

A move is great but daunting in lots of respects. I think one of the hardest things about moving to Queensland, was not knowing anyone. We soon made lots of friends and I think I now have more friends here than I do back in Sydney! ONe of the things i missed at first was not having friendships with people who had known me for years It’s been 4 years and I don’t miss Sydney much at all anymore. The adjustment took me about 2 years I guess. Melbourne is not far from Sydney so as you say, you will be able to visit regularly.
Have a great farewell party. Kick back! Now it’s up, up and away to a new life and a new job! xx
As for The HandMaid’s Tale – I love Margaret Atwood – good old Atty! I forgave her for writing a science fiction novel as it is done with the usual Atwood flair and although dark, very enjoyable. Let me know what you think of it.
I can agree with you there about moving. It is daunting. I have been down in Melbourne now for about 7 months and I am still only finding my feet. Most of my friends are still in Sydney or Newcastle. I have had the advantage of having both Mum and my brother down here (they’ve been here for 6 years now). I am definately looking forward to Ruth coming down as we can actually have some normality back in our relationship. We have been doing so much travelling back and forth between Melbourne and Sydney. It will be fantastic just to be able to say “do you want to go to a movie on the weekend?” and only having to worry about picking a cinema, rather than organise flights, rush through the weekend and then worry about heading back
. It has been difficult to spend relaxing time together when in the back of your mind you are thinking about how quick the time is going.
It’s good to know that you two got through the adjustment phase and also encourages me to expect there to be a period of settling in. It’s interesting how every city has its own unique character and ways of doing things. Even though it’s the same country, I still feel a bit like I’m moving to another culture. I’m having a farewell picnic at Bronte park so that is a very iconic sydney thing to do. Also going to Horizon Blu Bar one night for cocktails because I haven’t been there and I know it is also a very “Sydney” thing with views from the 36th floor overlooking the harbour before going to hear our friend’s band at The Basement.
The Basement is also a typical “Sydney” thing. Have seen many a good band down in this wonderful Jazz & Blues bar. Haven’t been to Horizon Blu (formerly Bar 36). Need to get there at some stage. Melbourne certainly has a different culture than Sydney, and definately has a different set of bars and restaurants. I think it is because the weather can be so unpredictable that everyone tends to do things indoors. There are still some fantastic beaches, although if you want to get surf beaches you have to travel 100k or so either side of the bay (Portsea on one side and Torquay/Bells beach on the other). There are plenty of parklands down in Melbourne as well and round the Yarra is quite nice as well.
Luckily I’m not worried if I never have to surf in my life (in my case, it would be called being dumped) but walking in parklands will be very nice. I’m yet to visit the botanic gardens in Melbourne and I will enjoy that when I do.
Good luck with the move…..not long to go now!! How many sleeps?
Thanks – only 6 sleeps as Andrew and I were only saying tonight!
Is Horizon Blu the former Horizons Bar in the old ANA Hotel, now sadly, the Shangri La? If so, you will love it. I used to go there all the time. I LOVED the ANA – best service and rooms.
As for surfing – I fear to get on a board these days would result in broken limbs for me. Everyone we know seems to be doing things like Bungy Jumping and leaping from planes. I hate planes, heights and parachutes so this woudl be one of my worst nightmares. I still don’t get why peopel want to jump outof a piddly little plane with nothing but a bit of canvas strapped to their backs and relyin gon teh instructor strapped to them to get them to safety and pull the right cord. Yuck! I would rather have teeth removed.
It is the bar which used to be Horizons in the ANA. I’ve never been there and it’s something I really wanted to do before I left Sydney. I agree about jumping from planes – I’m not overly keen either. I’ll be more than content never to have to bungy jump, parachute or hang-glide!
For me, you can add to that list; rock climbing, abseiling, white water rafting, kite surfing, any bridge climb
Steady on with the birdge climb bit
. I did the bridge climb this year (Harbour Bridge) and it was fantastic. I have virtgo, but it was worth it for the wonderful view and it was all very safe (you are attached to the walkway which has handrails the entire way). I am curious about throwing myself out of a plane (my brother and sister – both younger – have both done this and say it is great… little more cautious but I won’t write it off straight away). Have done indoor rock climbing before, but definately won’t try outdoor… Like a bit of excitement in my sports tho
Ruthy Dear

I’m sure I will and that would be fantastic – we could go for a skinny decaf soy latte at Fountain Gate!!
