New Toy: Lappie
I’m loving my new IBM Thinkpad laptop which I have recently purchased and is fondly known as ‘Lappie’. Amit took a photo of me working on it when I went over to his house last weekend to do the updates using his broadband (thanks Amit).
It really does make things a lot easier. One of the interesting features is the fingerprint reader to log on! It’s not 100% reliable though - sometimes doesn’t recognise my prints. I have recorded the prints for two of my fingers. I can still also log on with user name and password.
I’ve also purchased Adobe Creative Suite which includes Photoshop, Indesign, Illustrator, Acrobat and GoLive so I can edit photos and images easily as well as do web development stuff if needed. Amit helped me get the laptop set up with all the programs I need and settings. I was able to connect to the work network on Friday as easy as pie and have the choice to connect with wireless as well.
It’s really great to have such a useful tool and means I can do a lot more than before much more easily.

Hmm, lappie… Click here to see the original Lappy and one of the funniest and weirdest webtoons - Strongbad:

You new lappie is so cute and light. Slim, fit, healthy and suave. Need I say more… and dare I say I am J with your new Creative Suite 2. And congratulations on your new blog haircut and facelift. Looks like number 3 on top and number 1 on the bottom. Nice!
Laptops are excellent. Now you can be just like Carrie Bradshaw!
How are you enjoying the Female Eunuch? I can’t stand old cranky pants Greer. She always seems like she has an axe to grind and just for the hell of it. I also don’t get why so many feminsist feel like they ahve to make themselves look as unappealing as possible!
I am really enjoying the Female Eunuch, not because I agree with everything ‘Germie’ says but she writes well and it’s quite entertaining. She’s very clever and quite witty although definitely acidic, caustic and over the top but I quite admire that she was so honest about things at that time and wasn’t scared to take on the establishment (first published 1970). I think she brought about some changes which would have taken a lot longer to happen and which we now take for granted. I don’t agree that all men are the way she depicts but I do think it is quite empowering for women. I reckon a few of the Britneys and the Beyonces of the world need a dose of cranky pants Greer!
That’s interesting. I guess I see the Beyonce’s of this world as quite empowered in some respects because they have chosen to use their sexuality as a draw card. Maybe the same could be said of prostitutes although I think sex workers are degraded and obviously don’t make as much money as Beyonce! I don’t want to strip off for men’s mags but if other women want to do that then I feel that it’s up to them.
I hate the men bashing that Greer (and others like her) engage in. I find it puerile in many senses. I really like men and much prefer their general behaviour and social tactics to women in many respects.
Sean’s sister Virginia is a full on feminist. She won’t allow her daughter to play with dolls and deliberately dresses her in boyish clothing. She would vomit if a man held a door open for her. I think all that is required in a door-opening situation is a polite thank you as after all, it’s just an act of courtesy and not inferring that as a woman one is incapable of negotiating a door.
Virginia would have a pink fit if anyone purchased the child a tea set or cooking equipment etc. I think this is ridiculous as children copy what they see. Judah likes to pretend to do stuff that Sean does and I think this is just a natural part of him discovering his gender.
I also see it as empowering, fun and liberating for women to be able to wear what they want and express their sexuality but in another way I see a lot of it as the “consumption” of women via the media. I think it can be quite oppressive for young girls to make women like Beyonce or Britney their role models because reality is never as glossy as TV or magazines depict and this can have a negative effect on self-esteem.
Yes, I can definietly see that side of it too. It’s hard to live up to images of women who have been computer enhanced, cropped down and graphically altered.
What often makes me laugh is that men who are overweight, balding or otherwise pretty average, tend to expect women to look like vamps and rave on about their ability to get a Beyonce type. What on earth makes them think one of these women would be interetsed in them anyway? It’s almost like men can let themselves go completely and yet women are still expected to look 10 years younger and slimmer.
Having said all that, I think intellect is far more stimulating than any body “beautiful”
I agree Fiona!
