The beginning
It’s just over 6 months since I returned from working in Cambodia as an AusAid Australian Youth Ambassador for 9 months – as IT Adviser for the Women’s Media Centre of Cambodia (more on that later). That experience has partly inspired this foray into the world of web logging.
I plan to use this site as a tool for exploring the subject: Information and Communications Technology and its role in the development of people, communities and societies around the world.
So far, I have no clear plans about how this site will develop…

Ruth, thats great. Welcome to the world of blogging. Great to see you are up and running. Look forward to reading more on your site.
Hi Ruth
Sounds as if you and I have a lot in common. I too love to write and write and write and….LOL..Can’t wait to read your works and share mine with you as well. Will be good to get some tips. Good luck in your course and I look forward to meeting you in person one day down under.
That’s exciting! A key point from the class on Monday was the value of sharing writing. Good to hear you’re interested in writing too. It will be good to meet you one day as well – Amit speaks highly of you and it’s obvious you’re a valued friend.
When you were at university, did you ever think you would work in IT? It’s obviously a big industry. If you were to go back to study, what sort of course interests you?
No I didn’t! I was interested in publishing and editing which was the reason I applied for the job at Butterworths legal publishers. That was in electronic publishing which is how I moved into IT because we learnt all about web development there. I did the editorial training at Butterworths but found it quite uninteresting – probably the subject matter – but that changed my mind about going into book publishing. At one stage I was keen to move to journalism but again, was turned off by the focus on networking and the competetiveness which seems to go hand in hand with that career. I’ve applied to go back to Uni next year to do a Masters in Social Science (International Development) which will include a thesis and I’m keen to do that on a topic like ICT in Developing Countries and Communities. I’m not interested in pure IT in a technical sense – I find that really dry and dull. I’m more interested in the social/community development side of things and how IT can be used to improve education and other aspects of the lives of disadvantaged people and groups.
